Volunteers
St John’s Mill has grown and is sustained by a small team of employed staff and over 30 volunteers who assist the charity in making these unique facilities available for a wide range of events and activities throughout the year. The Mill hosts up to 90 events per month with 100’s of people attending an extraordinary wide range of programmes covering every aspect of Island life. .
At the heart of our work are four key values which we endeavour to live out day by day as an open community engaging with real everyday issues. These are:
Hospitality. Our aim is that the Mill should feel to a stranger like a place that they belong confident that they will receive good food, professional care and a genuine welcome.
Operational excellence: For both staff and volunteers we aim as a community to exceed the expectations of our clients in order to reflect the life of God through our service.
Prayer: We have maintained a cycle of daily prayer and Bible study at the Mill for over five years applying the daily readings to our circumstances and seeking inspiration and guidance in a fast changing and complex world..
Encouragement: The Mill is a place where ideas and dreams can become reality and we trust that the combination of people and place are conducive to releasing the inspiration and creativity that will be transformational through the many decisions and plans that are made here.
HOPE : When these four elements are in balance extraordinary things happen. They spell out hope because they are about personal and organisational renewal and healing.
The charity was established in 1999 as a Christian initiative to celebrate the Millennium with the objective of ‘seeking the inspiration of Christ for the community’. Our confidence was that those who engaged seriously with the teaching of Jesus will be changed as his first disciples were so many centuries ago.
There are a number of areas where we would value help.
Prayer Rota: The Mill has maintained a daily cycle of prayer from Monday –Friday for over 6 years. If you are able to lead this short informal meeting between 9.30 and 9.45 a.m. we would be delighted to hear from you.
Catering: The Mill endeavour to welcome every visitor and group as friends and as a praying community live out our faith in a way that honours God and is consistent with the teachings of Jesus.
Garden: The garden is managed by the Manx Wildlife Trust and provides a place of peace and tranquillity for many people. If you have time to help to maintain and improve it we would be grateful for your help.
Evenings and weekends: The Mill hosts many charitable events and activities. If you willing to undertake basic training your assistance will help us to stage more events and keep the costs of using the Mill down for our partners undertaking events and activities consistent with the Mills mission statement and values.
Water wheel: The wheel will be operational from July 09 and we need a small group to help with routine operation and to explain a little of the history and principles to visiting groups.
Spring cleaning: A couple of times a year we have a work party to give the mill a major check and clean. Join us for some hard work, followed by cakes and good company!
Web site: The new web site has several sections that require regular maintenance. If you have the skills or would like to be trained to maintain a section or to help us develop new areas please contact us.
Team events: The community of the Mill is growing and we want to build and maintain open and strong relationships between all the helpers. We will host 4 to 6 open events a year just for the team and we need help to come up with good ideas and help with the plans etc.
Finance: The Mill does not receive any major external support or funding so we depend on our own activities and the generosity of our friends to develop and extend the activities of the charity.
Creative Arts: The Mill is a great venue for teaching and doing. We have staged exhibitions, run workshops and hosted numerous events. Let us have your ideas!
Stage an event: If you have a compelling idea for a single event or to form a club or start a charity the Mill is a great place to begin. Every year since the Mill opened new ideas and dreams have come to fruition…tell us about yours.
Overall we know that volunteering is much more than telling you what you could do for us. We want it to be an experience that serves others, provides an opportunity for you to use your own skills and abilities or to develop new ones! You will be welcome to become part of the Mill team. Whilst many of those involved are inspired by their Christian faith we are an open organisation and will welcome your participation in our activities. Our aim is to give more than we receive and we will value any help that you can give to support us in our aims.
